Center for Human Development Receives Funding to Provide Housing to Vulnerable Union County Residents

La Grande, Ore – The Center for Human Development (CHD) has a longstanding history of providing for the physical and mental health needs of Union County residents. Thanks to newly acquired grant funding, CHD looks to expand services to help those who have
Behavioral Health (substance use and/or mental health diagnosis) needs who are
experiencing houselessness or in danger of becoming unhoused.

CHD’s history of providing treatment and services for those with addictions and mental health diagnoses has included screening and assessments, therapy, peer support, case management, Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT), NARCAN distribution, and training. Because of this history, we can help meet clients’ needs while building trusting relationships which are vital for healthy treatment outcomes.

“It’s incredibly difficult for individuals to focus on treatment when their most basic needs are unmet. Stable housing is one of the most important steps for recovery. It plays a huge factor in stability and safety. Housing, combined with services such as outpatient treatment, peer support engagement, and community involvement will give individuals the assistance they need to successfully recover.” Kory Escobar, Housing Coordinator at CHD.

“We understand that drug addiction is wreaking havoc in our communities. The opioid crisis is widespread and growing. CHD is expanding outreach, harm reduction, and low barrier screening and we are providing tools to help combat the effects and address the needs of individuals who are experiencing addiction and mental health issues in order to help them avoid becoming unhoused,” Lisa Whipple, BHRN Coordinator at CHD.

At CHD, we live and work in this community, we see the issues and we hear the concerns expressed by many in our community. We believe that this funding will help us address some of these concerns while we build trusting relationships with some of our neighbors in need.

CHD is currently forming a housing advisory committee made up of community
members from culturally specific community-based organizations who will help guide and advise efforts while ensuring representation from under-represented groups are considered.

CHD is a private, not-for-profit health organization located in La Grande, Oregon. CHD provides addiction and mental health services, intellectual/developmental disabilities services, public health services, and veterans services to the residents of Union County.
