EOU Sweeps Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week Awards for Second-Straight Week

By Dawson Forcella, SID

Corvallis, Ore. – (Release from Eastern Oregon University Athletics) For the second-straight week, Eastern Oregon’s Women’s Track and Field Team swept the CCC Athlete of the Week awards presented by Rize Laboratories. Maggie Ledbetter earned the honor for the second time in as many weeks for her performances in the throws while Michelle Herbes picked up the award for the first time after a dominant weekend. Ledbetter and Herbes had big showings at the Vandal Open and McClusky Multi meet hosted by the University of Idaho.

Ledbetter had another strong weekend hitting “B” standard marks in the weight throw and the shot put. In the weight throw Ledbetter took fourth with a toss of 52 feet and 1 inch which ranks in the top-five of the EOU record book. Then in the shot put the graduate student hit another “B” mark with a throw of 43 feet, 11 and 3/4 inches finishing fifth overall.

Herbes started the meet with an impressive time of 2:56.45 in the 1,000 meter race on Friday which was good for a career PR and a first place finish. The time also earned her an automatic qualification for the national championships and put her at No. 2 all-time for EOU in the race behind only Faith Homer who set the record in 2018. In her next event on Saturday Herbes again earned an “AQ” in the 600-meter race. This time around she posted a time of 1:34.93 finishing second overall. Like her performance in the 1,000-meter race, her time in the 600 also ranks second all-time in EOU program history.

Ledbetter and Herbes will be back in action with the Mountaineers this Saturday at The Podium in Spokane, Wash. Eastern will compete at the indoor venue in a meet hosted by Whitworth.
