LA GRANDE – Sunday, July 17, Engine 46 and Medic 2 assisted La Grande Rural Fire District with a small outbuilding fire. Crews were on scene for approx 2 hrs. During this time a separate call for medical help came in that was staffed by off-duty firefighters who responded to the station on their days off to help cover additional calls.
This was the 2nd time in as many days that they offered mutual aid on fire to their neighboring volunteer partners. In both scenes, they were the first-arriving suppression crew. La Grande FD stated they are fortunate to train together, making their operations more seamless.
“When we say that we’re here for you, we mean it! This is true for on-duty crews and those that are off-duty,” La Grande Fire said in a Facebook post. “We rely on off-duty crew members to fill in when we’re running multiple calls at once or a resource-intensive single call. Those off-duty members sacrifice many hours each month to ensure we have you covered when you need us most! We love what we do, which at its heart, is serving you!”
