La Grande Police Department will host its 14th Annual ‘Shop With a Cop’ Event

La Grande, Ore – This year’s La Grande Police Department Shop With a Cop event will be held December 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Walmart.  (15) children in grades 1-6 have been selected from our local schools to participate in this year’s program.  The children are selected by school staff based on a financial need or children who would benefit from positive interaction with police officers.

On the day of the event, each selected child will be partnered with a police officer and will be given $150.00 to spend Christmas shopping for their immediate family.  This is a fun opportunity where the children get to be the hero and shop for others while getting to spend positive one-on-one time with police officers from the La Grande Police Department, the Union County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon State Police.  In addition to buying presents for their family, each selected student will be able to purchase a gift for themselves as well as receive generous gifts from Walmart and other community partners.  Through generous donations, we were able to also purchase new backpacks stuffed with goodies for each of the selected children.  After each child is done shopping, they will be provided lunch while volunteers wrap all of their Christmas presents for them.  Police officers will then drive their child home with their big bag of gifts and big smiles!

In coordinating this event over the last 14 years, this event continues to be my favorite thing I have participated in as 24-year veteran police officer.  This is one event where everyone is full of Christmas joy and positively impacted.  It is not uncommon for us to hear from the participating children, “This is the best day of my life.”    We will have approximately 34 volunteers helping us this year, including police officers, spouses,  retired police officers, dispatchers, administrative staff, LGPD volunteer staff, and Walmart employees.

This event would not happen without the generous support we receive from our local businesses and community members.  We would like to especially thank our local Walmart store.  They generously give a grant to us each year that assures this event will continue to happen!  We would also like to thank Loveland’s Funeral Home who pays for the lunch for all of the selected children and all the volunteers.  Legacy Dodge, Coca-Cola, and Dominos are other businesses who contribute to this event each year.

Anyone who wishes to donate to our Shop With a Cop program during the event (December 13th from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.) can do so by contacting Carla Greenough in the volunteer gift wrapping center in the front of the Walmart store where Subway used to be. Donations are also accepted any time of the year at the La Grande Police Department.

Anyone who has any questions about the Shop With a Cop program can contact Lt. Jason Hays or Carla Greenough at the police department or call us at 541.963.1017.
