Stranded North Powder Couple Rescued by Baker County
Search and Rescue Team

Baker County Search and Rescue

Baker County – (Release from Baker County Sheriff’s Office) On February 18, 2023, at approximately 4:11 p.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office received a transferred call from Union County Dispatch. It was reported that two individuals were in a Ford F-150 traveling on Collins Road in Medical Springs and became stuck. The caller did not want Baker County Dispatch to request a tow truck but preferred they call a friend for them. After reaching out to the requested party, it was determined he would not be able to respond to render assistance.

Sheriff Ash activated the Baker County Search and Rescue team at approximately
5:09 p.m. SAR members, Eugene Hawes, Derek Miller, Danny Downing, and Lt.
Ryan Downing responded to the area of Big Creek Road with side-by-sides. Once
unloaded, two SAR members drove approximately two miles on Collins Road and
reached the individuals, identified as Benjamin Buchee (59 yoa) and Terry Runnels
(66 yoa) of North Powder, Oregon. Both Buchee and Runnels were in good
condition. The couple was given a ride back to their residence in North Powder.

The Baker County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind folks to be mindful of the
conditions when traveling unpaved roads throughout the county, especially during
the winter/spring months. Many roads are still covered by snowpack and may be
impassable. If you plan to travel, please be prepared and bring extra provisions
such as food, water, warm clothing, and always notify someone of your anticipated
location.

Baker County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Baker County Search and Rescue members for their response and assistance.
